TWIS

This week in science we did the marshmallow challenge, we also recorded our 10th grade intro video. This was our second time doing each of these projects. When doing the marshmallow challenge  we broke it up into two sections the first time we were not  able to talk to our group members. When it was time for us to create our 10th grade intro video, we all whent out onto the roof which was the difference between the first time we did a video log.
Doing the marshmallow challenge showed me that, it is easier to work in a group when there is verbale comunication. I noticed that it wasn't as diffucult doing the challenge this late in the year, because the first time we did it, we could have spoke, but not everyone  wanted to speak much. Most likely because of the fact that we didn't know each other.
I think I improved with working in groups. The marhmallow challenge taught me all of the things that go into haveing a successful group.

Here these students are trying to create a steady base in the middle of the spaghetti .

Now these students are actually putting the marshmallow on top.

Here my group and I are still trying to figure out what to do with the materials given, this was before we where able to talk to each other.

TWIS #12

I think that if my group and I left the spider in the tank, sealed, and with no plants the spider would die. I think this because, with out the plant the spider wouldn't have anything to give CO2 to so it would get no O2.

This month in science we worked on human impact, in groups. The first thing we did was a worksheet. We had to count how many people we saw pass by either walking, riding a bike, driving trucks, buses, and cars. Then later on that week we went out side to survey people about their human impact habits. We asked them things like on a scale from 1-5 how strict about recycling are you, etc. We also created slogans and drew a picture to match it to put on to a t-shirt.
I learned that a lot of people contribute to the pollution. Most people leave the water on for more then a minute to brush their teeth. People should try to make recycling a habit. Most people chose 3 for the scale of recycling. I also learned that it's not easy to get a point across. When creating the design for the human impact project it was hard for my group and I to think of things that would catch peoples eyes.
I would say that this month was successful. My group and I got our work done.

TWIS# 9

This week in science I dissected a giant grass hopper, and a Skate. When dissecting the grasshopper, I noticed that there was less to see on the inside, (compared to the Skate). The grass hopper had an orange inside, and pretty much everything looked the same, while the Skate's insides where easier to identify, because of its  bigger size.
I learned what dorsal and ventral views are, dorsal view is the view from the back, and ventral is the view from the stomach. Another thing I learned about was the placement of a Skate's body parts. I also learned a Perch' heart is in its head.
The differences between a Skate and a grass hopper are, that they are different species. The skate is a sea creature, while the grasshopper  is an insect. Dissecting the grasshopper was harder than dissecting the skate because, the grasshoppers body parts were smaller, and more delicate than the skates.

TWIS#6

This week in science, we worked with crickets, and also with jelly beans. On 12/5/11(lesson 2: cricket investigation) we had two parts to our lesson. For  part 1 we had to do background research, including ten peaces of information on crickets. When doing part 2 we had to write down "Two Choice" experiments. Then on 12/6/11 (lesson 3: Data day: Crickets) we observed the crickets in groups, and had to make a poster, on weather they prefer the wet or dry sides of their tank. On 12/8/11 (lesson 4: Jelly Bean)

Cricket investigation

Do Crickets Prefer Fruit or Vegetables?

Hypothesis: The crickets will be neutral towards them both, because, in nature they have no choice between fruit or vegetable.

Background Research: -Crickets feed on almost anything. ( usually organic things, if nothing organic is available, they will eat their own dead species.)
-Adult Females Have: Long ovipositor ( ventrally attached, it may appear as two pieces)
-Immature Crickets: Look like adults, but don't have fully developed wings.
-Predators of crickets: Spiders, some wasps, ground beetles, birds, small rodents, and lizards.
